BAWANG MERAH AND BAWANG PUTIH

Scene I

            Once upon a time, there was a couple that had a beautiful daughter named Bawang Putih. They lived happily until the mother died mysteriously. So Bawang Putih lived with her father. Near their house, there was a widow with her only daughter, Bawang Merah. They loved to visit Bawang Putih’s house, give them food, and hang out with Bawang Putih. Seeing his daughter happy again, Father decided to marry Bawang Merah’s mother and the four of them lived together.

            Bawang Putih’s father was a merchant, so he liked to travel a lot, leaving his daughter alone with her step mother and step sister. At first, they treated Bawang Putih very nicely. However, their real feelings soon came out and they treated Bawang Putih like a slave. Bawang Putih was ordered to clean to house, wash their clothes, and make their breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Bawang Merah and Ibu Tiri were very mean to Bawang Putih, but Bawang Putih never hated them, She always prayed for them.

Some day, Bawang Putih’s life would change.

Scene II

(Bawang Putih is cleaning the floor while listening to the I-pod and singing. Then there’s a shout behind the stage)

Ibu Tiri                        : Putih! Bawang Putih! (Entering the stage, followed by Bawang

  Merah) Bawang Putih!

Bawang Putih             : Ah! Yes, Mother?

Ibu Tiri                        : What are you?! Deaf? Can’t you hear me calling your name?

Bawang Putih             : Forgive me, Mother. I was listening to my I-pod...

Bawang Merah            : (seize the I-pod from Bawang Putih’s hand) Let me have it! You

  don’t deserve to have this kind of technology.

Ibu Tiri                        : That’s right, my dear. Anyway, Bawang Putih, you have a job to do.

Bawang Merah            : (goes off-stage and enters the stage bringing a bag

  full of dirty clothes)

Ibu Tiri                        : You must wash that. And I want it finished, tonight before dinner! I

  don’t want my dear daughter to get sick by not having dinner in   time. (Hug

  Bawang Merah and Bawang Merah hug her Mother.) Don’t be late!

(Ibu Tiri and Bawang Merah get out from the stage.)

Bawang Putih             : Dear God, please open their heart. I just want the best for them.

Scene III

(Bawang Putih arrives at the river. She walks straight to the bank of the river and washes their clothes. While washing clothes, she begins to sing and then she hears someone following her singing. The voice comes from the rock. She approaches the rock slowly, and then sees a Mermaid sitting on the rock.)

Bawang Putih             : Mermaid?!

Mermaid                      : I’m sorry if I scared you. I didn’t realize you. (I don't get this??)

Bawang Putih             : Are you a Mermaid?

Mermaid                      : (combing her hair.) Yes, I’m a Mermaid. Who are you?

Bawang Putih             : I’m Bawang Putih.

Mermaid                      : What are you doing? Washing clothes?

Bawang Putih             : (smiling) yes.

Mermaid                      : Are these all of your clothes?

Bawang Putih             : No, they’re not mine. They belong to my Step mother and step sister.

Mermaid                      : You have to wash all of their clothes?

Bawang Putih             : (nod)

Mermaid                      : Unbelievable. What if I help you?

Bawang Putih             : Help me what?

(Mermaid said some magic words, and then all of the clothes were clean and washed.)

Bawang Putih             : Wow, thank you so much, Mermaid! You really helped me!

Mermaid                      : No problem! Is there anything else that I can help?

Bawang Putih             : No, no. Thank you so much, Mermaid. Now I can go home earlier

  and make dinner. I want to see you again.

Mermaid                      : Well, I’ll see you tomorrow. Wait for me in here.

Bawang Putih             : Sure! See you, Mermaid.

(Bawang Putih and Mermaid say goodbye.)

Scene IV

(Ibu Tiri and Bawang Merah are lazing around, and then Bawang Putih comes home earlier. Ibu Tiri and Bawang Merah shock.)

Bawang Merah            : What are you doing coming home so early?

Bawang Putih             : I finished washing all your clothes, and now I want to make your

  dinner.

Ibu Tiri                        : Ah, you lie! You took our dirty clothes to a laundry, didn't you?!

Bawang Putih             : No, Mama. I washed everything by myself.

Ibu Tiri                        : Whatever. Go make our dinner!

(Bawang Putih gets out from the stage.)

Bawang Merah            : I don’t believe it, Mama.

Ibu Tiri                        : You think I believe it? It is impossible to wash all of those clothes in

                                      a second!

Bawang Merah            : Hmm, what if we play a prank on her, Mama?  ???

Ibu Tiri                        : What’s your plan, my darling?

Scene V

(Bawang Merah whispered something to her Mother. On the next day, as usual Bawang Putih went to the river with a bag full of dirty clothes, and Bawang Merah gave her a long list of groceries. She had to buy all of those in a day. However, because of Mermaid’s kindness, all of the dirty clothes were washed and all of her groceries were on hand. Bawang Putih didn’t come home late and gave all of the things that Bawang Merah and Ibu Tiri wanted. Bawang Merah and Ibu Tiri became very suspicious with Bawang Putih’s handiness.)

Scene VI

Ibu Tiri                        : My dear, I wonder what Bawang Putih is doing at the river so

                                      she could finish all of her chores so quickly?

Bawang Merah            : You think I know, Mama?

Ibu Tiri                        : I’m so curious who is helping her. (Think for a while) Ah! I have an

                                      idea! My dear, tomorrow, we’ll follow her to the river. And we’ll see,

                                      who’s helping her, how’s that?

Bawan Merah              : That’s a brilliant idea, Mama. There, we’ll see who’s helping Bawang

                                      Putih, and perhaps we can teach that person a lesson.

(Bawang Merah and Ibu Tiri laugh evilly and exit the stage.)

Scene VII

(Bawang Putih enters the stage and brings a bag full of dirty clothes again.)

Bawang Putih             : Mother, Bawang Merah. I’m going to the river.

Bawang Merah            : Bawang Putih! After you finish washing, go to the village chief and

                                      give him this.

Bawang Putih             : Okay.

(Bawang Putih exits the stage, Bawang Merah and Ibu Tiri peak at her.)

Ibu Tiri                        : Perfect. She’s gone, my dear.

Bawang Merah            : Now can we follow her, Mama?

Ibu Tiri                        : Well of course, my dear. XX (no need to repeat the line)

(Ibu Tiri and Bawang Merah look around to make sure it’s clear for them to follow Bawang Putih, and then they exit the stage.)

Scene VIII

(Bawang Putih arrives at the river, while waiting Mermaid, she begins to wash.)

Mermaid                      : (entering) Hey, Bawang Putih. Sorry for keeping you waiting.

Bawang Putih             : that's okay.

(They begin to chat, laugh and hang out. Then Ibu Tiri and Bawang Merah enter slowly.)

Ibu Tiri                        : Oh! So it's that Mermaid who is helping Bawang Putih?! This is

                                      unacceptable! I am very angry, furious. But Mommy doesn't know

                                      what to do.

Bawang Merah            : Wait, Mommy. I have a plan. What if....

(Bawang Merah whispers something to Ibu Tiri and then they laugh together. While they’re laughing, Bawang Putih finishes her laundry, and then they hide so Bawang Putih can’t see them. )

Bawang Putih             : Mermaid. I got to go, I have to visit the chief and give him this. Is it

                                      okay if I leave you alone here?

Mermaid                      : No problem, I still want to hang out in here for a while.

Bawang Putih             : So, I’ll see tomorrow?

Mermaid                      : Yes! Can’t wait to see you, sis!

Bawang Putih             : Me too, best friend! Well, see you. Bye!

Mermaid                      : Bye!

(Bawang Putih exits the stage. While Mermaid is having fun playing with her tail, Ibu Tiri and Bawang Merah come, torture her, try to kill her. She defends herself, but Ibu Tiri hits her in the head, so she dies.)

Ibu Tiri                        : C’mon, my dear. Take her! We don’t have much time!

(Ibu Tiri and Bawang Merah exits the stage and carry Mermaid.)

Scene IX

(It’s already night, Bawang Putih arrives at home to make Bawang Merah and Ibu Tiri dinner. Suddenly, Bawang Merah and Ibu Tiri enter the stage, carrying a big plate.)

Bawang Putih             : Wh..what is this, Mother?

Ibu Tiri                        : Well of course this is a dinner, what else? Tonight, Bawang Merah

                                      and I have made something special for you, Bawang Putih. Please sit

                                    down Bawang Putih.

(Bawang Merah guides Bawang Putih to the chair and lets her sit.)

Bawang Merah            : Now, eat the food, sister.

(Bawang Putih is glad looking at the change from her step mother and step sister. And then she eats the food in plate. While she’s eating, Bawang Merah and Ibu Tiri begin to laugh. Bawang Putih stops eating.)

Bawang Putih             : What’s wrong? Is there something funny?

Bawang Merah            : Don’t you know? That fish you are eating is your best friend in the

                                      river, that sassy Mermaid. We killed her, and make you eat her.

Ibu Tiri                        : Yes! Do you enjoy her, Bawang Putih? Because we enjoy it!

(Ibu Tiri and Bawang Merah don’t stop laughing and leave Bawang Putih alone in the stage.)

(Bawang Putih begins to cry and then get out from the house and find the rest of Mermaid’s body.)

Scene X

(Bawang Putih enters the stage and buries the Mermaid’s body.)

Bawang Putih             : (burying Mermaid and crying) Goodbye, Mermaid. I promise, I will

                                      Always visit your grave.

Scene XI

(On the next day, Bawang Putih keeps her promise and visits Mermaid’s grave. However, she is surprised. There’s a beautiful tree growing from Mermaid’s tomb. Bawang Putih is amazed, yet feels happy knowing that her best friend is resting in peace. She always visits the tree, singing around the tree, and dancing. One day as she is singing, a Prince passes by and accidentally hears her beautiful voice. )

Prince                          : Oh my God, where’s that beautiful voice coming from?

(Prince looks around to find the voice, and suddenly sees Bawang Putih from a distance. He is very amazed at her voice and accidentally keeps peeking at her. Bawang Putih feels that there’s someone watching her, she looks behind and then sees the Prince. She screams and then runs.)

Prince                          : Wait! Wait for me, my lady! I just want to know your name. Wait!

                                      Wait for me!

(Bawang Putih exits the stage.)

Prince                          : Wait! My Lady! Argh, she’s gone! Now what must I do? (walk back

                                      and forth.) That voice, I can’t stop thinking about that beautiful voice.

                                      Is this love? Am I really in love? (walk back and forth) I need to go

                                      home. I will make an announcement to the city that I’m looking for a

                                      woman that has a beautiful voice, and perhaps, I will marry her!

(Prince exits the stage.)

Scene XII      

(Bawang rushes into her house.)         (why is she afraid?)

Bawang Putih             : Is that man still following me? I hope not. Hah, that was close.

Bawang Merah            : Hey, Bawang Merah! What have you been doing, panting like that?

Bawang Putih             : Nothing, Bawang Merah.

(while interrogating Bawang Putih, Ibu Tiri got a message from her cell. She reads it and is shocked.)

Bawang Merah            : What’s wrong, Mama? Are you okay?

Ibu Tiri                        : No, I’m not okay! I just got this message. Here, read it.

(TODAY THE PRINCE is looking for A WOMAN THAT HAS A BEAUTIFUL VOICE AND LIKES TO SING AROUND A TREE. THE PRINCE WILL ENTER EACH and EVERY HOUSE, AND WHEN THE PRINCE FINDS THE WOMAN, THE PRINCE WILL PROPOSE AND MARRY THE WOMAN.)

Bawang Merah            : Oh, no! What who is this woman that likes to sing?

Ibu Tiri                        : (think for a while and then realize that Bawang Putih is the person

                                      that the Prince is looking for.) No! Don’t tell me that the woman is

                                      you?!

Bawang Putih             : (nod slowly)

Ibu Tiri                        : What did I tell you, Bawang Putih! No singing! I can’t imagine you

                                      marrying the Prince! (shake Bawang Putih’s body)

Bawang Merah            : (separate her mom and Bawang Putih) Mama! No, Mama! Let her go!

                                      I have an idea. What if I pretend to be Bawang Putih? I will take her

                                      place, and let Prince marry me. How’s that, Mama?

Ibu Tiri                        : Hmm, not a bad idea. I like it, my dear. And when you marry him,

                                      we will be rich and we can be the heir of the castle, and we will

                                      rule this city. (laugh with Bawang Merah.)

(Suddenly there’s a trumpet sound from the back, signing that Prince is coming to their house.)

Ibu Tiri                        : Oh, my gosh! He’s here! Bawang Merah, hurry! Make yourself over,

                                      So you look like Bawang Putih. Bawang Putih! Help her!

(Bawang Putih and Bawang Merah exits rashly and Ibu Tiri cleans herself up and welcomes the Prince)

Ibu Tiri                        : Good afternoon, Prince! Please, come in! Welcome to my house.

                                      Please, sit down!

Prince                          : Ah, no. Thank you. I’ll just stand right here.

Ibu Tiri                        : Well, can I get you a drink? Iced tea? Orange juice? Lemonade?

Prince                          : No, no thank you. I won’t be long here. So, I've already asked this

                                    question or a million times. However, I will ask it again.  Do you know

                                    a lady that has a beautiful voice?

Ibu Tiri                        : Yes. Yes! She lives here; she’s my daughter, Bawang Merah. Let me

                                      call her. Bawang Merah!

(Bawang Merah enters the stage with a new look. She wears a wig and Bawang Putih follows her from behind.)

Ibu Tiri                        : (approaches Bawang Merah and introduce her to Prince) This is my

                                      daughter, Bawang Merah. She’s the one that you saw this morning.

Prince                          : Wh..what about that lady behind you?

Ibu Tiri                        : Oh, she’s just a maid in this house. Here. What are you waiting for?

                                      Marry my daughter.

Bawang Merah            : Hello, my Prince, I mean, my future husband. I’m ready to get

                                      married with you. (try to kiss and hug Prince)

(Prince is a little bit suspicious about Bawang Merah.)

Prince                          : Wait, wait a minute. I’m not quite sure that you are the one that I saw

  this morning.

(Ibu Tiri and Bawang Merah stare at each other; Prince tries to think for a moment and then talks)

Prince                          : I’ll tell you what, why don’t you sing for me? I just want to make

  sure your voice is the one that makes my heart stop. If you’re the one,

  I will marry you. If you’re not, then you and your mother will go to

  prison for lying to me.

(Ibu Tiri and Bawang Merah are very scared but they continue their plan. Then Prince sit down, followed by Ibu Tiri.)

Prince                          : Please, sing.

(Bawang Merah takes a deep breath, and then sing. Shockingly, Bawang Merah has a beautiful voice, too. Ibu Tiri is shocked yet happy to know her daughter has a beuatiful voice, too. Prince is amazed by her voice, and then stand up and clap his hands.)

Prince                          : Incredible! I love it! You have a beautiful voice and I keep think

                                      about your voice. Wonderful.

(Prince reaches out his pocket and holds a ring. He’s down on his knee.)

Prince                          : Bawang Merah, will you marry me?

Bawang Merah            : Oh yes, I will! (take the ring from Prince’s hand and put it around

                                      her finger.)

(And then Prince holds her head, try to kiss her, but her wig is getting loose. He is shocked because the woman that he saw this morning has a long hair.)

Prince                          : Oh My God! You are not the woman that I saw this morning!

Bawang Merah            : No, please forgive me, Prince! I can still make it up to you!

Prince                          : No! I feel disgust!

(Prince tries to stay away from Bawang Merah and then suddenly Bawang Putih takes a step and sing in front of them. Prince freezes for a moment, remebering that familiar voice, and then approaches Bawang Putih.)

Prince                          : Now that’s the beautiful voice that I heard this morning.

(Prince approaches Bawang Merah to take his ring back. They are fighting over the ring, but Prince wins. And then he proposes Bawang Putih.)

Prince                          : Well, My Lady, will you marry me?

Bawang Putih             : Yes, I will.

(Prince puts the ring on Bawang Putih’s finger.)

Prince                          : Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s move this celebration to my

  castle. We will announce our wedding there.

(Everyone leave Bawang Merah and Ibu Tiri alone.)
